Be Creative

Today is the VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR Day! I grew up reading Eric Carle books and enjoy the edgy, colorful illustrations accompanied by the easy learning offered to kids of all ages. My oldest daughter loves his books as well. What better way to celebrate than by doing a simple, fun caterpillar craft! I’ve included the FREE printable below for your little one to do as well!

Materials needed:

The paint colors needed are: green, yellow, red and black. Mix green and yellow together to get the light green color shown above. Stipple brushes needed: (3) 1 1/4″, (2) 3/4″ and (1) 1/4″ with the sides trimmed to create an oval versus a circle. You need two paint trays; one for your paint and the other for a place to put your brushes after you’re done.

Craft table ready to use!

Use one stippling brush per paint color. Dip a 1 1/4″ stippling brush into the red paint, push it onto the large red dot, place brush on empty tray. Use a new 1 1/4″ stippling brush for the green and a new 1 1/4″ stippling brush for the light green. Push the paint color on the corresponding dot color. Having the dots on the paper really helped my three year old daughter know exactly where to put each paint color.

Use a 3/4″ stippling brush, dip into the red paint and push it onto each small red dot (the apple), add more paint when needed. Next, use a new 3/4″ stippling brush, dip into the black paint and push on the black dot.

Use the cut 1/4″ stippling brush, dip into the yellow, and push two times on the big red dot for the caterpillar’s eyes. Then, take the Q-Tip, dip into the green and push in the middle of each yellow spot.

My daughter really enjoyed this craft! The dots on the paper helped her to know which color to go for next and where the paint was supposed to go. I did help guide her with the Caterpillar’s eyes. 🙂

I also wanted to share these cute finds! THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR book and this cute teether/rattle for my youngest daughter. I didn’t want to leave her out! I’m looking forward to the day when they can both craft and play together!

I hope your little one enjoys this simple, fun craft as well!
