Be Creative

Kids love to learn and explore everyday! It’s our job to teach them and help them understand the amazing world and universe we live in! My daughter loves to look at the moon each night and has become very fascinated with the moon and stars. This was a perfect opportunity to teach her about the Solar System and all of the amazing planets!

To start, we read “Solar System” by Jill McDonald. It is an easy read with fascinating illustrations that help to teach kids about each planet and their order from the sun. She really enjoyed all of the bright colors and explanations of the planets. And of course she matched our learning topic! Her dress can be found here.

We wanted to take our activity outside and make more realistic planets next! Sidewalk chalk is always a great tool to use to allow more hands-on learning! And planets are easy to draw because they’re all round! 😉

Sun

Mercury

Venus

Earth

Mars

Jupiter

Saturn

Uranus

Neptune

Pluto

The completed Solar System! We went around and named each planet! You could also draw them in a line to make it more visually realistic regarding the order of the planets from the sun! Another great tip that I always love using are mnemonic devices. One to remember the order of planets: My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas!

My Grandfather worked for NASA, so seeing my daughter’s excitement with learning about the moon and planets brings me a lot of joy! It’s also never too early to learn about the Solar System!
