No Holiday season is complete without making a gingerbread house! I’ve always loved the traditional houses, but thought it would be fun to make one out of Pop-Tarts! I’m not a huge fan of the taste of gingerbread so this was definitely a win! Not to mention the Pop-Tarts are already frosted so it adds a sweet touch right from the start!

Materials needed:

Directions (Pop-Tart prep):

You need 6 individual Pop-Tarts per house.

Lay one Pop-Tart horizontally (sideways) and one Pop-Tart vertically (straight up) against each other.

Using a knife, gently saw the vertical Pop-Tart at an angle.

Move the horizontal Pop-Tart to the other side and cut another angle.

Lay the angled Pop-Tart on top of another Pop-Tart.

Using the angled Pop-Tart as a guide, cut the angles in the bottom Pop-Tart.

Place another Pop-Tart vertically (tall) next to one of the angled Pop-Tarts.

Cut straight across.

Repeat with another Pop-Tart.

You should have 2 regular Pop-Tarts (roof), 2 cut at an angle (front and back of house) and 2 cut straight across (side of house).

Assembly:

My daughter has an egg allergy, so I don’t use the traditional eggs in my icing. To make this Royal icing use 2 lb bag of powdered sugar and 1/4 – 1/2 cup of water. Continue to mix until you get desired consistency (it should be similar to toothpaste). You can always add more water to make it thinner or add more sugar to make it thicker.

Place icing in a piping bag or a Ziploc bag. Cut a small hole in the corner (the decorating tip is optional).

Glue the short (side) Pop-Tarts to the back of each angled (front and back) Pop-Tarts. Hold for a few seconds – minutes until hardened.

Spread a generous amount of icing on top.

Place the 2 whole Pop-Tarts on top and add additional icing down the center (top of roof). Allow the house to harden for at least 30 minutes before decorating to ensure stability.

I used this container to sort the candy for decorating. It also comes with a lid which helped to keep everything sealed and ready to use for another activity!

My daughter really enjoyed decorating her “gingerbread” house.

Everything was purchased using Curbside pickup which was very convenient, especially during these times. Stores usually always have Pop-Tarts on hand! 😉 This was also a fun Holiday activity to make together! Definitely a new tradition that we will start moving forward! ♥
