Be Creative

My daughter has really enjoyed looking at the moon every night before bed. One of her new favorite books is “I Love You to the Moon and Back,” by Amelia Hepworth. As a parent, it’s always fun to watch your child learn and explore and to experience with them the way they see the world. We wanted to do a craft that embodied her new interest. This simple Moon and Stars craft can be completed using inexpensive items you already have on hand!

Directions:

Draw a star shape on the flat end of the stipple brush. This doesn’t have to be a perfect star.

Starting at the base of the foam (near the wood handle), line your scissors up in a “V” shape against two lines and cut straight up.

Cut out each outer section of foam until you get your desired star shape. You could also use a small star shaped cookie cutter for a hollow star or a different star object if you have one on hand.

Mix the paint colors you want to use for the moon. We used dark grey (black and white mixed), light grey (white with a touch of black mixed) and light purple (purple and white mixed) for our moon colors. I like to separate each paint color in these silicone muffin cups

Craft table ready to use! Start by placing a paper plate face down onto a piece of paper. Leave another paper plate off to the side to place used cotton balls.

Using a cotton ball, start by stippling the dark grey all over the base of the paper plate. Follow with stippling the light grey and then the light purple. You can then randomly dip into each color and stipple to blend the colors together.

Allow to dry. You can use a blow dryer to speed up the drying process.

Flip the moon over and add glue around the rim of the plate. Glue it face down in the middle of the black construction paper.

Using your star shaped stipple brush, dip flat into white paint and gently press down onto the construction paper. Randomly add as many stars as you like!

Allow the stars to dry.

She really enjoyed seeing the moon come to life and had fun using cotton balls to paint with! It’s always great to change things up and let kids explore with different shapes and textures when learning and creating! This is an easy activity for kids of all ages to complete!

She was excited to show Daddy her craft and loves to look for the Moon when she goes to bed each night! ♥
