Be Creative

Wreaths are always fun to make and display during the Holidays!  I made this DIY yarn wreath for Christmas but realized it can actually be displayed in my daughter’s room year round! It was very easy to make and can be tailored to fit your specific color theme!

Materials needed:

  • 12 inch floral ring
  • Wool roving yarn – I purchased mine from Hobby Lobby and used 1/2 of it (13 yards) for my 12 inch wreath. These are similar and come in a variety of colors!
  • 10 inch diameter wood bead wreath – I purchased from Hobby Lobby. You can also use loose wood beads in 5/8 inches or these wood bead halves.
  • I found the wood vine wreath in Target’s Bullseye’s Playground section. This one is very similar.
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors

Directions:

Unravel your yarn.

Fold it in half.

Cut the end and join your two pieces together (this will make the wreath thicker).

Form a loop on one side.

Place your hand through the loop.

Grab the longest piece of yarn.

Pull through (but not too tight).

Place your hand through the loop again and grab the long piece of yarn (top).

Pull through.

Repeat steps above until you have the desired length for your wreath. Set aside.

Lay down the floral ring.

Run a strand of hot glue on top of the inside portion of the ring.

Lay your wood bead wreath on top. You can also glue individual wood beads along the top (inner) edge or wood bead halves for the same look!

Start at the base of the wreath and add a substantial amount of hot glue in one small section.

Place the base of your braided yarn onto the glue.

Continue to add glue and place the yarn around the wreath.

Make sure to work in small sections so that all of the yarn is glued down.

The outside edge of the braided yarn will be hanging off of the floral ring.

Once you’ve glued all the way around, take the remaining yarn (hanging down) and braid it back into the wreath.

This will help to seamlessly connect both sides.

Cut your wood vine wreath in half.

Sand any rough edges on the wood.

Glue the wood vine wreath on top of the wooden beads in desired location.

Make sure it overlaps onto the yarn as well.

Make a bow with the wool yarn and add it to the bottom of your wreath.

The finished wreath! I really like how it turned out! If you want the yarn to be more secure you can sew it through the holes on the ring. I felt the glue was strong enough for my application, but I would recommend sewing the yarn to the ring if you’re going to add heavier flowers or more weight to the outside of the yarn. The final diameter of my wreath was 16 inches. Check out this DIY heart wreath version! 🙂
